COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is 12-week online secondary social studies methods course that will help you teach 7-12th grade social studies classes. The course uses current research and theory to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to effectively teach a diverse array of students. Weekly participation is expected. There will be a variety of formal and informal discussions and activities. This course has been designed as a cooperative effort between the Utah State Office of Education, the Utah Education Network, and Axel Donizetti Ramirez, a professor of education at Utah Valley University.
Instructional Goals:
Prepare you, the teacher, to help students understand the complexity and meaning of social studies education.
Give teachers resources and examples for teaching social studies with best practice and theory.
Help teachers meet state and national expectations of social studies teaching and learning.
Focus on mastery of subject matter and student outcomes.
Explore inquiry as an important tool for teaching social studies.
Create an atmosphere of professionalism and respect.
These online USBE CANVAS courses have been designed for active educators who are working on fulfilling the requirements for specific social studies endorsements. While the courses are not completely self-paced, they are asynchronous. Coursework unlocks weekly, so that the participants engage in the course material as a cohort, one week at a time. Educators can work on the course material when convenient within each week of the course.
