Biases: (accessible for students regardless of background): Most texts are from American and British writers; there's a bit of a heavy focus on classics from a traditional cannon, but newer and more diverse voices ARE present in every unit. Commercial Free, including political interest: As a whole, the text is free of political interest or promotion of products or companies. All instruction is skill-centric. However, given texts have definite perspectives and prejudices. For example, one unit includes an excerpt from the Bible AND an excerpt from a Toni Morrison piece. Both of these texts are controversial and promote specific perspective. The overall textbook does an excellent job of providing multiple perspectives and voices. If a person were to randomly choose a piece, they may assume the textbook to have a particular perspective. However, if that person were to read the whole book, they would not be able to identify a political interest or party promoted by the text itself. legal compliance: yes | ||||||
