Evaluation

The My Music Journal learning series is a blended learning resource that could be a great supplemental resource for classroom teachers to enhance music education. The series provides a great deal of useful content, but will require a teacher with skills and understanding of State Standards to unpack the content and to sequence it. In its current organization content is laid out by music element and has no guide for scope or sequence. The textbook is clearly designed to be used as a student consumable (workbook) as there are activities for the students to complete in the textbook. Teachers using this resource would need to understand that they will have to purchase the text each year. However, as teacher resource, there are many lesson ideas that could be very helpful for teachers building a lesson plan as there are a wide variety of activities and instructional examples.

Vocal examples are inadequate for student learning as there are only text descriptions of vocal technique and audio examples are exclusively from the piano, providing no model for students. Assessments are not recommended as they lack grade appropriate language and require mostly basic memory recall. Teachers will need to prepare separate student learning assessments. The content of the series focuses on the standards in the Performance Strand of the state standards, but has very few performance-based assessments. Other state standards are neglected in this series.
