STEMscopes organizes their lessons into 5E style teaching. Integration of the 3-Ds seemed minimal in their materials. They are referred to during the pre-lesson lead up, but emphasis varied by module.
Integration of Three Dimensions of Science: Materials integrate elements of the SEPs, CCCs, and DCIs for student sense‐making: Three dimensions of science (SEPs, CCCs, and DCIs) are integrated (consistently utilized in conjunction with each other) to help students make sense of phenomenon and solve problems. Three dimensions of science (SEPs, CCCs, and DCIs) are consistently integrated. Three dimensions of science are integrated in certain portions of the instructional material. Three dimensions of science are rarely integrated in the instructional material. Three dimensions of science (SEPs, CCCs, and DCIs) are separated and not integrated for student sense making.
They included all 3 dimensions throughout the 5 E set up; however, clarity of integrations varied by module. They were clearly state in the teacher information, but not restated in the lesson. The 3-Ds appear to be disjointed and not well integrated. Use of the 3D Inventory sheets was unclear in the course of the lesson.
Alignment to Standards: The DCI Concepts (science content) in the instructional materials align to the Utah Science with Engineering Education (SEEd) Standards DCI concepts (science content) in the instructional material align to 100% the SEEd Standards for the Grade/Course. DCI concepts (science content) in the instructional material align to 75% the SEEd Standards for the Grade/Course. With the full grade band, modules can be moved to cover at least 75% of the curriculum. On several of the module, parts of the lessons branched off from what the focus should have been for the standard and took it beyond what would be appropriate for the intended grade level. Ex. 7th grade atoms 7 molecules.

Each section has a phenomenon. It was a little confusing in their engage sections, at times, the purpose of the Investigative Phenomenon and the Hook and how they connected. Ex. There didn't seem to be a logical connection between the Investigative phenomenon and the following activity that students would get with marathon runners needing resources to resources found on a new planet. At times, the phenomenon were not usually referred back to in the lesson series. Even with those concerns, they did use the phenomenon to drive students questions and explaining well.

Each of their Engage sections directly has an activity to "Access Prior Knowledge" followed by a graphic organizer. The 5E set up helps with the scaffolding. They do activate student's prior knowledge for the topic, but not on the 3-Dimensions.

Provides strategies for linking student engagement across lessons (e.g. cultivating new student questions at the end of a lesson in a way that leads to future lessons) ii. Excellent resources, answer keys, teacher background info, both editable and printable resources. Teacher slides that can be edited are also included. Estimated time for each activity was very helpful! They also had quite a few videos to help with teacher set up and explanation of the activity.
Assessments: Includes formative, summative, and guidance measures for interpreting student performances that assess three‐dimensional science learning. i. Embeds formative assessment processes throughout conceptual development that surfaces student understanding to inform instruction ii. There are three summative assessments were provided for each module. One CER paragraph, one open response, and one multiple choice. How well they targeted the SEP's & CCC's for the standard was questionable, but very effective in providing information, data, diagrams to gather from to form the assessment responses. Although there are answer keys, there were not effective rubrics to identify the range of student understanding. The lesson series have well thought out teacher supports and would be easy for most teachers to implement. There is not a lot of materials required outside of the stem scopes online curriculum.

A lot of effort was put into keeping the activities basic improving familiarity with supplies and what was done with them to investigate the science. They had suggested supplies, but alternatives if there was no access to the first option. Real world examples reflect practices and connect students to their local environment, even with no visible connection to culture.

There was a Spanish translation, but very little other support for differentiated instruction in other areas of need. Resources provide options for intervention as well as acceleration. They do provide well thought out graphic organizers that often help guide student thinking & explaining.
Accessible for all students: Engages students using methods, vocabulary, representations, and examples that are accessible and unbiased for all learners (e.g., Deaf and Blind, English Learners, Gifted and Talented, Special Education). They generally kept the examples and phenomenon appropriate and accessible. Some assignments were definitely beyond student grade level while others were at a basic level. There wasn't always consistency throughout.
