Evaluation

This program is a comprehensive package that includes text and teacher’s guides for reading comprehension, writing, and spelling. There are components for fluency and word work (syllable division, phonograms, spelling procedures). The spelling instruction includes phonemic awareness, systematic phonics, and high frequency vocabulary instruction. Writing instruction includes high frequency vocabulary instruction, sentence construction, and essay composition. The reading component includes literary appreciation, text structures, and mental actions. Teacher interactions include “coaching” sentences and transition to higher order questions.

This program does not include a supplemental language support component. Materials do not show evidence of structures for differentiation (instruction or assessment). Materials are primarily blackline masters but also include book lists that are incorporated into the lessons. Reading instruction (texts) are lower instructional lexile level than warranted for rigorous 5th grade instruction. Texts are widely diverse but are frequently short passages, which does not allow for extended analysis.
