CATCH PE Journeys is a physical education curriculum for grades K-8 that teaches physical literacy, movement skills, physical fitness, social-emotional learning, skill competency, and cognitive understanding about the importance of lifelong physical activity. Accessed online through a teacher-facing platform, CATCH PE Journeys follows a 36-week scope and sequence with sample units, student-facing resources to support learning with visual content, flexible assessment tools, hundreds of games and activities, activity demonstration videos, and guidance for inclusion of youth with physical and intellectual disabilities. Grade banded for K-5 and 6-8, CATCH PE Journeys aligns with national and Utah core standards for K-8 physical education.

CATCH PE Journeys accommodates a variety of individual characteristics such as developmental status, previous movement experiences, fitness and skill level, body size and age. Primary grade lessons include games and activities that feature creativity and imaginative play, simple learning cues and essential questions, and opportunities for student self-expression and choice. As students matriculate to upper elementary and middle school, lessons employ strategies highlighting small-sided game play to maximize participation; individual, partner, and group skills practice; goal setting and reflection. All assessment materials are differentiated to support literacy levels of each grade band and include opportunities to demonstrate learning in the physical domain as well as the cognitive and affective domains.

CATCH PE Journeys also helps to ensure that students engage in maximum amounts of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during class time, and promotes opportunities for and enjoyment of physical activities outside of P.E. class with the CATCH Coordination Kit. Numerous research studies have supported CATCH’s effectiveness for increasing children’s MVPA, including a randomized controlled trial in which CATCH increased the amount of PE class time spent in MVPA by 41%.
