For example, OUGH appears in “enough, thought, and through,” but sounds different in each case! Sound spellings in this List also include EA spellings with various sounds. EA can sound like both short and long E. Long E spelled EA is found in “please,” while Short E spelled EA is found in “breath, pleasant, and pleasure.” EA is also found in “realized,” but in this instance, you pronounce both the E and the A. The sharp-eyed child who finds the EA in “heard” might be interested to find that letters EAR work together to sound like /ER/. Good thing we have images and body motions to help children learn these words just as easily as they did shorter, less confusing ones!
