Description
Our research-based High School program, EarthComm engages students through real-world challenges and projects that require science content knowledge coupled with student creativity to complete. Students engage in the inquiry process from start to finish by observing, exploring, and building models before constructing explanations of phenomena. The curriculum prepares students for the 21st century, college, and workforce readiness through STEM activities that involve collaboration, communication, development of explanations, critical thinking, data collection, organization and analyzation of data, observation, and interpretation, and using evidence to support claims. Students engage with complex situations and collaborate on what they need to learn to manage the situation effectively. They are motivated to learn science in the context of highly engaging and authentic “real-world” projects that guide instruction and serve to organize their learning. Students will learn science the way real scientists learn science.

EarthComm is a comprehensive, project-based, secondary level course developed for all high- school students by the American Geosciences Institute (AGI). In EarthComm, students learn about the interactions among the various parts of the Earth system by reflecting on the ways in which matter and energy flow through the Earth system and the different ways in which Earth’s processes occur over time and space. Students work together to address the Chapter Challenge using the same iterative Engineering Design Cycle used by many geoscientists and engineers. The curriculum also features a robust Web site filled with student and teacher resources regularly updated by AGI. The Web site is accessible for all users without needing a password or username and is frequented by both students and teachers.
