For over forty years Mrs. Spalding inspired teachers with her love for literature and her desire to help children learn to speak precisely, spell accurately, write proficiently, and read fluently with comprehension. She often said her dream was to prepare all children to become “lifelong learners,” including those who need challenge and those who require more help. The Spalding Method is a diagnostic approach that requires continuous monitoring of students’ progress and adjustment of instruction to meet students’ needs.

The Writing Road to Reading Textbook is divided into two parts: “Lessons, procedures and Why This Method Works,” which describes the content and methodology of the program; and “Instructional Materials,” for use in lesson planning and instruction.
