The USDB Assistive Technology (AT) team is excited to announce our 24-25 PD offerings. Through many collaborative conversations and research we have designed a PD model that we believe will foster success for student AT skills and teacher AT confidence and instruction. The educator should finish the PD strand with more fluency, understanding, and most importantly deeper skill mastery of the AT area. In this training module, participants will learn to teach their students how to set up Voiceover on an iPad in order to use it to edit text. They will also explore the various methods of inputting text into their device using Voiceover gestures. In addition, participants will learn to teach their students how to set up a hardware keyboard or braille display to interact with their device as well as more seamless methods to edit lengthy text on an iPad.

During these presentations, participants will learn how to include other sensory modalities such as vestibular, proprioceptive, olfactory, and gustatory stimulation/response in a comprehensive Learning Media Assessment for students with multiple impairments. Using the Sensory Learning Kit from APH, participants will have hands-on opportunities to utilize the materials in order to collect data for the LMA. In addition, participants will learn to collect data with low and high assistive technology devices to document and analyze how their students are utilizing these tools to learn.

In this training module, participants will learn how to teach their students to use PowerPoint and Google Slides with JAWS. First, they will be able to teach their students to navigate a PowerPoint presentation using JAWS, then how to navigate Google Slides as well. Then, they will learn how to insert new slides and edit them with text. They will also be able to teach their students how to access a slideshow using a braille display with JAWS muted. Lastly, we will practice the same principles in how to set up a slideshow in Google Slides in the same manner.

This training module will focus on foundations and principles for teaching students to discriminate tactile symbols, and to read, analyze, and effectively apply the information in tactile graphics. We will discuss methods for creating meaningful and relevant tactile graphics, and examine the tools that teachers and students can use to produce them. We will explore the differences between and purposes for using a variety of graphics, including real-object, collage, tooled, embossed, and electronic display.

In this training module, students will become proficient in changing system settings, applying system updates, and connecting and managing Bluetooth braille displays and peripherals. In this training module, participants will learn how to utilize Forced Choice to teach students with multiple disabilities and CVI how to use eye gaze meaningfully. Before attempting high tech devices, learn to teach your student to use eye gaze purposefully. The developmental stages of the Communication Matrix will be reviewed and used as a baseline to determine the appropriateness of eye gaze as well as a review of the CVI range. We will discuss utilizing a progression of teaching from real objects to collage/tactile representations to pictures or raised-line drawings.
