Please join the Utah State Board of Education’s locally certified Check & Connect Trainers for a two-day in-depth training designed to provide individuals acting as Youth in Care (YIC) or Prevention Mentors with the information, competencies, and skills needed to be an effective Check & Connect (C&C) Mentor in Utah’s schools. Participants will learn about the “Check” data collection, and how C&C Mentors “Connect” with students and families to promote engagement and school completion.

Please join the Utah State Board of Education’s locally certified Check & Connect Trainers for a two-day in-depth training designed to provide individuals acting as Youth in Care (YIC) or Prevention Mentors with the information, competencies, and skills needed to be an effective Check & Connect (C&C) Mentor in Utah’s schools. Participants will learn about the “Check” data collection, and how C&C Mentors “Connect” with students and families to promote engagement and school completion. As well as the other core components and elements of Check & Connect, including how to implement the "Check" and "Connect" procedures with fidelity at the local level, how to best meet their needs of the population of students they are mentoring, and how to build relationships with students, families, and school personnel. This training is for Local Education Agencies (LEA = School District and Charter School) staff who will be:

1. Acting as C&C Mentors,
2. Experienced YIC and/or Prevention Mentors who would like a refresher of the full C&C Model,
3. School-based or LEA Administrators who would like to better understand the role and responsibilities of a C&C Mentor.

Not sure what C&C Mentoring is? First, check in with your supervisor to ensure they have participated in the necessary administrator Preparation and Implementation Training. Then come to the training to learn about the evidence-based C&C Model that provides interventions using students’ academic, behavior and course performance data. A trusting relationship between the student and a caring mentor is the core of C&C. The goal of C&C mentoring is to support school completion, prevent student dropout, improve educational outcomes, and help students prepare for post-secondary success. Of the dropout prevention interventions reviewed by the U.S. Department of Education's What Works Clearinghouse, Check & Connect is the only program found to have strong evidence of positive effects on staying in school. YIC Directors, please remember all YIC Mentors must participate in at least one initial C&C Mentor Training session and are welcome to participate in a repeat session if interested.
