A key component of The University of Utah Tanner Dance is the Summer Professional Development Workshop. This workshop provides participants with an in-depth, week-long, intensive, and individualized experience in arts integration in the classroom. The focus this summer is on integrating dance and visual art with math, science, language arts, and social studies for students in grades K-6. The workshop teaches participants to incorporate dance, visual art, and literature into the elementary teaching curricula. It runs concurrently with the summer session of the Tanner Dance Program at the University of Utah. Teachers attending the workshop spend their mornings devoted to developing practical technical training of the body; understanding the craft of dance through the elements of time, space, and energy (8:30 a.m. to noon). In the afternoon, teachers (1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.) explore visual art experiences that demonstrate dance and visual art relationships and create teaching tools. Teachers will also observe dance classes throughout the week to demonstrate the use of movement in the classroom.
