Fire as an omen, elemental force, metaphor, and searing personal experience – these are the subjects explored by the artists of Facing Fire in the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art’s fall exhibition. The artists of Facing Fire bring us incendiary work from active fire lines and psychic burn zones. They face fire, sift its aftermath, and struggle with the implications. Use the imagery from fire to create poetry, meaning, and memory.

Teaching Artist John Westenskow
John graduated from USU with a Bachelor of Fine Art and Education, with an emphasis in ceramics. John taught art and ceramics in the Logan City School District for 36 years. Make a unique clay project with John that will fire up your artistic skills!

While quilts often evoke a sense of comfort, warmth, and safety, we rarely consider the forceful processes required to create them. Like the actions that form and re-form our planet, quilts are created through brutal means—in the case of a quilt, material is cut or torn, pinned, pierced by needle and thread, worked, and reworked by the artist until an aesthetic object is formed. Primal Forces: Earth explores both the inherent and human mediated forces that impact the earth on which we live, all through the medium of textiles. Come learn how art quilts can be used in cross-curricular lessons adaptable for different grades!
