This course provides APPEL educators with the opportunity to explore current research and theory in classroom management, creating positive teacher-student and peer relationships, developing optimal learning environments and democratic character, teaching social skills, responding to persistent and serious behavior problems, and adjusting practice to meet the needs of different groups of students. The course will help APPEL educators learn how to design a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation (INTASC Standard 5; UETS Standard 3). APPEL educators will discover the importance of collegial relationships by exploring, as a community of learners, ways to enhance student learning and well-being. They will apply these concepts and classroom management ideals immediately in their own classroom at the start of the school year.
