During this 8-week course teachers will explore “classroom ready” strategies that will support students to: understand text, analyze the structure of the text, and distinguish important ideas while rejecting less important information. All of this must be then synthesized into a short, succinct, organized, well-crafted piece of prose. Imagine the effect of these skills on reading comprehension, all kinds of writing: especially writing on demand, and vocabulary building. Teachers will gain knowledge on how to integrate these strategies with the Utah Core Standards for English Language Arts. Participants will engage in learning tasks that model high yielding comprehension strategies in action and develop lessons in which they employ some of the strategies learned back in their own classrooms.
