Participants will receive 2.5 credits for completing the online course and attending 4 two-hour in-person sessions or 2 credits for only completing the online component. This course is by mathematics education professor, Jo Boaler (Stanford University) on “How to Learn Math for Teachers.” In this course, participants will learn brain and learning research, teacher strategies for increasing students’ math motivation and achievement, teaching strategies for increasing students’ number sense and understanding, teaching strategies for understanding and for making math exciting and meaningful, research-based good practice for assessment and grading, and teaching strategies for reaching all students and for motivating de-motivated students. Additionally, participants will hear from leading education researchers Carol Dweck (Growth Mindset) & Sebastian Thrun (Stanford Professor and Co-Founder of Udacity) as well as master teacher Cathy Humphreys (author of Making Number Talks Matter) and 2014 Fields Medal recipient Maryum Mirzakhani.
