This microcredential reflects educators who practice with themselves and their learners routine calibration experiences to inspire world-class performance.

DESCRIPTION

To earn this 0.5 USBE credit microcredential you will submit two evidence items from the list below to demonstrate your effective and consistent use of calibration in both your instruction and your personal practices. CLARIFICATIONS

Calibration to understand that the world-class bar to exceed is not about competition. It is about being inspired to be at that level and understand the authentic challenges being at that level. No one reaches world-class levels every single time. It is more about what you are working toward - the journey, not the destination. Why do something that has already been done before?

IMPORTANT TERMS

Calibration: Calibration is an experience that is so profound, it alters how one sees, understands and perceives things to the point they cannot look at something the same way. Good calibration experiences work because they create new neural pathways in the brain so the brain doesn’t process things the same way.

BACKGROUND SCENARIO

Ms. S is a high school math teacher. In preparation to introduce her learners to trigonometry concepts, she wants them to understand and become curious about real world applications. She invites a video and animation engine software engineer who is able to show how the math applies to their real work. Her learners are exposed to world-class work for these concepts.

Each year, Ms. S attends a professional conference or online PD for other professions that utilize complex math in their products. Last year, she attended a game engine software conference and this year, she is working with some relationships to attend a hedge fund quant conference.

Over the years, she has found other international math teachers doing revolutionary work with their learners and participates in monthly video conferences with them to share practices.

EVIDENCE OPTIONS

Video: Submit a 5-10 minute video of a calibration experience in your instruction. Include a video or written statement in which you describe the routine calibration experiences you have given yourself and your learners and reflect on each one and how it helped reshape your view and understanding.

Unit Plan: Submit a unit plan of your design that you have used in your instruction. This unit plan should demonstrate your effective and consistent use of calibration experiences as a part of your instruction. This unit plan should include specific calibration experiences and the process of curating these experiences based on learners’ needs.

Testimonial: Submit video or written testimonial statements from at least one learner and a personal testimonial statement. These testimonials should demonstrate your effective and consistent use of calibration experiences as a part of your instruction. Specifically, these testimonial statements from yourself and learners should discuss the impact of calibration experiences on understanding, perspective, and motivation.

Candidate's Choice: Submit another type of evidence demonstrating your effective and consistent use of calibration experiences during instruction.

Candidates are required to make 2 evidence submission(s).

Review Criteria

Criterion 1: Calibration experiences must be routine and periodic.

Criterion 2: Calibration experiences must be curated to be personalized and have a high probability of experiencing what world-class is.

Criterion 3: There are specific documented reflections about calibration experiences and their impact on mindset and future actions.

REFLECTION PROMPTS

  1. Explain how you have incorporated powerful Calibration experiences that changed your perspective into your lesson plans and how it has affected your personal learning process.

  2. Illustrate how your learners’ knowledge and use of Calibration has impacted their work.

  3. What experiences should I give myself as an educational leader that I can put into actions, protocols and decisions to create this environment?

Review Criteria

Criterion 1: Authenticity – did you actually do it, what have you learned and what are you going to do next?

Criterion 2: Specific next steps for further implementation that will impact more of your practice – what you are going to do more and less of.

Criterion 3: Clarity and focus of impact on learners, where it made a difference and where there are still challenges in the process for the next iteration of implementation.
