Narrative: Materials The tutorial is very well laid out and easy to read. The navigation has the breadcrumb trail so that students see where they are in the site. There is also a tutorial on how to navigate the site. Each chapter is well marked. Each chapter contains links for a lesson video, lesson text, and quiz. There is also a chapter exam at the end of each unit. Teacher Material The teacher material section contains the lesson objectives, class discussion questions, and activities. There are answer keys tot he quizzes, but it is unnecessary as the quiz itself is in the lesson and is graded and scored by the computer. Language The topics in this resource are up to date with the html5 version of the language. It does cover older versions for comparison. Deprecated tags and self closing tags are discussed but are not used in the assignments for the tutorial. Software The text editor shown in the tutorial is NotePad or TextEdit. The talk about the different types of browsers but they do not have a specific browser that the student need to use. The tutorial shows how to create files the files, folders, and zipped folders on both a Mac and PC. The image editing software includes examples for Paint on a PC. Preview or iPhoto is used on a Mac. Content The lesson covers html5 and css. The HTML topics include core elements, links, tables, images. CSS topics include styling backgrounds, and links, positioning, graphics, and tables. They cover dynamic menus, and~Pseudo-Selectors. They also cover HTML5 versions of adding sound and video figures. The content lightly covers JavaScript and Query for some special effects. The early lessons do not pertain to any concepts within the Web Development "Core" standards. They seem very elementary and could probably be covered in an earlier class, but might provide a nice review or .starting point for students who haven't learned any web programming. Chapter 2, Lesson 3 - 4 touches on Standard 2, Objective 1in the core and aligns quite well. This could be useful supplemental material for Web Development. Chapter 3 expands on element tags (Standard 2, Objective 1). All of Chapter 6, 7, and 8 aligns with Cascading Style Sheets for formatting and designing style to webpages (Standard 3) including good programming practices for easier reading in the future. Standard 1and 4 are only covered sparsely through some of the materials. It seems they are not aligned with this particular instructional content. Standard 1includes fundamentals about servers, routers, packets, IP address, firewalls, domains, Domain Name Server (DNS), copyright, and Acceptable Use Policies.Standard 4 refers to site planning and maintenance. KidsCoder: Web Design focuses primarily~on the creation and design of a website with very limited scripting and interactivity using Javascript and jQuery.Standard 5 (scripting and interactivity) seems to be filled by Chapters 25, 26, and 27.Standard 6 seems to be thoroughly aligned with chanter 28 and the supplemental materials.
