What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear “The West”? Is it images of cowboys and settlers? Huge empty expanses of desert?
On this evening, we’ll use our special exhibition, Many Wests, on view February 4––July 11, 2023, to explore the inclusion of multiple perspectives and voices. We’ll discuss how challenging a single-sided history or narrative allows classrooms to engage in critical thinking skills and explore how art can be an approachable way students can share their own thoughts and ideas.

Maynard Dixon is best known for his paintings; what people may not realize, however, is that he was also a poet. Searching for a Home: Painted and Poetic Imagination in the American West looks at both painting and poetry and how they complement each other. The exhibition relies on a handful of loans from significant institutions, but the majority of the art comes from the BYU Museum of Art’s permanent collection, which is the largest in the world. Come see how students can use both poetry and painting to express their sense of place and personal identity!

The title for this evening was drawn from the Joseph DeLappe exhibit Resistance, Memory and Play and Kim Cosier’s lecture “Art Education When the World is on Fire” in which Cosier states, “We are surely living in a time that is filled with peril, but I believe it is also a time of great possibility.” This evening we will focus on the possibilities and discuss how to build curriculum that fosters resilience and resistance through the integration of art. Our hands-on workshop will focus on large-scale cardboard and paper sculptures and installations as well as DeLappe’s theme of "Imagined Memorials." Participants will design and create memorials to events or people who may have been overlooked or forgotten. We will explore paper and cardboard construction methods as well as how to manage large-scale projects in the classroom.

We often associate size with importance: saying something is grand could refer to its large size, or to its significance. Or both. The contemporary artists represented in Monumental Matters: Experience and Introspection in Contemporary Art use larger-than-life pieces to encourage viewers to consider the human experience more closely. At the workshops, educators will make these monumental artworks accessible to children of different ages, teachers of varying experience, and model incorporating art into the core curriculum. Come see how working in Windex, soil, metals, and other mixed media can be used to teach core standards!

See how art and science come together in our special exhibition: Air, on view July 16–December 11, 2022. Air is many things. From your exhaust pipe to your neighbor's window—air is kinetic. At once globally circulated and intimately passed between our bodies—air is shared. A source of inner strength and energy to millions—air is power. We’ll be exploring the way we can use air with science, technology, art, and math (STEAM) to have critical conversations in the classroom and to find creative ways of engaging and art-making.
