This course utilizes The Reading Strategies Book: Your Everything Guide to Developing Skilled Readers to introduce teachers to many strategies to improve the reading instruction in their grades 1-3 classrooms. This will be a make-it-take-it course, providing teachers both the strategies and the opportunity to make the needed materials to build their reading repertoire. This course utilizes The Reading Strategies Book: Your Everything Guide to Developing Skilled Readers to introduce teachers to many strategies to improve the reading instruction in their grades 1-3 classrooms. This will be a make-it-take-it course, providing teachers both the strategies and the opportunity to make the needed materials to build their reading repertoire. The more than 20 strategies shared include goal setting, working with sight words, improving reading stamina, encouraging diverse reading, early reading skills (one-to-one correspondence, beginning and ending sounds, blending, etc.), fluency phones, summarizing, plot structure, retelling, understanding character traits/emotions, and attending to text features. Teachers will be introduced to each teaching strategy and then make the requisite materials used as resources for teaching each strategy.
