Edivate Pilot Micro-Credentials

Online course

All Edivate Micro-credentials have two sections:

Section 1: Learning Experience

A Learning Experience can be described as: An experience intentionally designed to help the learner develop competency through delightful and engaging multi-media enhanced content.

We build Learning Experiences by starting with well-researched principles of learning as a foundation for our instructional design. In our design process, we carefully craft outcomes of the learning, and design activities that ensure the learner can apply the knowledge and skills necessary to demonstrate competency. We then develop a highly engaging experience, by producing videos, web interactions, animation, info-graphics, visuals, and combinations of these forms of learning.

Section 2: Micro-credential

A micro-credential is a credential earned by demonstrating competency through evidence such as student work, videos, essays and other artifacts.

Innovate Your Guided Reading with Intervention Plans

Face-to-face course

Instructors will begin the day with a brief explanation of specific research that shows the effectiveness of small group, differentiated reading instruction. This research is the basis for providing this specific course in hopes that teachers will apply best practice, research-based knowledge to their own classrooms and improve student learning.

We will begin by learning about the profile of a pre emergent reader and show the tools necessary to assess and plan for instruction. We will model strategies for teaching print concepts, phonological awareness, and early writing skills. Then teachers will be given opportunities to apply and solidify these strategies by teaching each other in small groups.

Participants will learn the profile of emergent and early readers and be shown the tools necessary to assess strengths and goals which will then help teachers strategically plan lessons to meet student needs. A 2-day lesson outline will be presented. Each component of the presented plan connects directly with Utah core standards. Sight word review is an essential component to help students build visual memory and show the teacher which words have been successfully transferred to student writing. Participants will see a brief video showing a sight word review procedure in action. After explaining how to do a quality, brief book synopsis, teachers will watch a video clip showing an emergent, ability-grouped plan being carried out. Participants will be given a resource explaining effective prompting to guide students to internalize strong reading behaviors and habits. Participants will then learn procedures to teach new sight words and do word studies that reinforce phonological and phonemic awareness. Finally, dictated and guided writing instruction will be shown and explained using more video clips. The instructor will model how to fill out an entire lesson plan that includes the previously taught core components. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and collaborate together to write their own lesson plans. They will present their plans to each other.

Later in the day, teachers will be provided with various materials and resources to create activities that provide active learning experiences for students. These materials are directly connected to the instruction presented during the day.

The course will finish with time for participants to ask any additional clarifying questions for deeper understanding.

Instructional Coaching - Working with a Reluctant Teacher

Face-to-face course

In this course we'll explore how an understanding of the complexities of helping and partnership can dramatically improve the quality of learning interactions. Real learning conversations can have a huge impact on professional learning - this presentation outlines some essential ideas that should be addressed for those conversations to flourish. We will consider six questions to explore many reasons dissonance can exist between teachers and change agents. Embedded in the six questions are strategies for leading change that we have learned from the many educators we have met. Adopting the strategies increase the likelihood that teachers will adopt new and better way of teaching.

Leading Impact Teams

Face-to-face course

Leading Impact Teams training was provided by coaches who are trained in the Leading Impact Teams model as well as through reading the book and applying its principles. The purpose of the training was to help promote teacher, student, and collective efficacy. Leading Impact Teams taps into the scheduled team planning time every school already has, and repurposes it in a model that provides the processes needed to build teacher expertise and increase student learning. The model combines two existing practices, formative assessment and collaborative inquiry, and promotes a school culture in which teachers and students are partners in learning. Readers will learn how to: build a culture of efficacy, take collective action, embed student-centered assessment in the classroom culture, clarify learning goals and criteria for success, leverage progressions of learning for “just right” instruction, utilize evidence-based feedback, and maximize peer and self-assessment in classroom practice.

Nature to the Classroom Conference

Multi-day learning opportunity

Nature to the Classroom (NTTC) is a project conceived by Utah Valley University students and faculty to reach out to local K-12 schools and collaboratively create opportunities to incorporate nature into the classroom. Recent research on school children has reported disturbing trends in childhood obesity, social isolation, behavioral and attention deficit issues, and what author Richard Louv (2012) calls “Nature Deficit Disorder”. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that exposure to a natural environment can be a potent tool for teachers: Boosting learning retention, reducing stress, and improving focus. What NTTC is attempting to achieve is a dedicated and growing body of educators who recognize the importance of getting youth outside, engaging with their environment in active learning and active play, and using nature as a tool to enhance the existing curriculum in schools.

This project brings teachers together to learn about the benefits of nature education and teach practical steps to help them make it happen. Educators from schools in Utah Valley are being recruited to participate in a three-day two-night conference at the UVU Field Station at Capitol Reef National Park. Through presentations, discussion, group initiatives and collaboration, teachers will return to the classroom with lesson plans designed toward incorporating nature into their curriculum.

To receive credit, there is a required assignment that must be turned in no later than three months following the conference. This assignment will be an original lesson plan incorporating nature into any subject, meeting core standards. A detailed breakdown of the assignment will be provided at the conference. More details can be found at www.nttcconference.com

REACH 1-2 Day Multicultural Education K-12 Institute

Blended Learning

Respecting Ethnic and Cultural Heritage (REACH) is a two-day training that uses a highly interactive, nationally validated K-12 teacher training mode. This training supports the development of inclusive multicultural and global classroom and school environment that addresses the understanding and appreciation of Utah’s fast growing diverse populations. The training builds participant background in the application of multicultural and global education data. It also provided activities, assessments and teaching strategies that enable participants to individually develop multiculturally infused lessons from Utah Core Curriculum they use in the classroom. This is accomplished by taking participants through progressive stages of understanding and internalizing the REACH 5 Basic Principles: including multiple perspectives, culture is something everybody has, building cultural bridges, head-heart-hands-healing and co-responsibility for social change.

REACH Day 3 Multicultural Education K-12 Institute

Multi-day learning opportunity

Consistent with staff development research, the REACH Day 3 is a follow-up workshop, recommended to take place 8-10 weeks after the REACH two-day training. Participants will have had sufficient time to implement the multicultural teaching strategies and lesson plans, and assess their impact with students. The Day 3 training reminder is sent to participants requesting that they 1) bring a personal, significant cultural item to share in a 3-minute presentation, and 2) bring at least one example of a multiculturally infused lesson plan that they have used in a classroom setting, and 3) share successes and difficulties in using their grade level manual curriculum. To review understanding and application of the previously learned 5 REACH Basic Principles, participants are assigned to pair or triad team. Each team removes an item from a grab bag, is given time to decide how the item is related to the assigned basic principle, and then reports out to the large group. The purposes of #Stages of Multicultural Growth” activity is used to establish individual and organizational realization of multicultural growth. This assessment encourages a commitment to engage in an ongoing process toward greater multicultural competence. Topic related videos and a diversity perspective presentation enhance the interactive workshop discussion and activities.
