This microcredential represents educators' effective instruction on the 5 components of health related fitness. The foundation of the Fitness for Life is based on these 5 components.
To earn this microcredential you will need to collect and submit two sets of evidence demonstrating your effective and consistent instruction on the 5 components of health related fitness. You will also complete a written or video reflective analysis.
You must personally understand these 5 components to be able to effectively teach them.
cardiovascular endurance muscular strength muscular endurance flexibility body composition
FFL does not have standards for elementary grades, although some standards are focused on the health related fitness components so understanding is required for all grade levels.
The 5 components of health related fitness are the foundation of the secondary Fitness for Life course.
Submit the evidence listed below to demonstrate your effective and consistent preparation and planning for performance physiology instruction.
Submit 5 well-developed lesson plans, one for each of the components of health related fitness:
You must use the lesson planning template in the Resources section. Be sure to complete each section of the template.
Additionally, include a section describing how your lesson plan aligns to the research base for best practices in motor development instruction. See the Resources section below for examples of sources to cite.
Submit ONE of the evidence options listed below to demonstrate your effective instruction on the components of health-related fitness.
Submit a video of your instruction using one of the lesson plans you submitted for evidence of preparation and planning. Your video should be at least 5 minutes in length. The video should demonstrate your effective instruction of the components of health-related fitness.
Be sure to follow your district/charter guidelines for student privacy.
Submit at least 3 samples of student work generated during the lesson plans you submitted as evidence of preparation and planning. These student work samples should demonstrate your effective instruction of the components of health-related fitness.
Be sure to follow your district/charter guidelines for student privacy.
Criterion 1: Evidence includes individual lesson plan and assessment for each of the 5 health related fitness components (cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition).
Criterion 2: Evidence demonstrates that the five submitted lesson plans have been used effectively in the educator's instruction. The lesson plan template is used, with each section completely filled out. Enough detail is given to demonstrate the educator's pedagogical skill in teaching the target concepts.
Criterion 3: Evidence demonstrates the assessments are used in the classroom, assesses the objectives, and checks for student’s understanding of the standards.
Describe how you implement each of the 5 components of health related fitness in your instruction. How does focusing your lessons on the individual components strengthen your curriculum?
Why is creating standards based lessons important in fitness for life instruction? How does having an engaging lesson improve your classroom management?
Why is assessment important in physical education instruction? How does assessing guide your teaching?
Criterion 1: The reflection demonstrates understanding of the 5 individual components of health-related fitness.
Criterion 2: The reflection demonstrates an ability to create and deliver effective lessons on the 5 components of health-related fitness.
Criterion 3: The reflection demonstrates the educator's understanding of the importance of assessment in physical education instruction.
This slide deck has background on the five components of health-related fitness.
You must download and use this lesson plan template for the evidence of preparation and planning requirements.
